What is a stray animal?
Any animal that wanders onto a roadway, park, ravine or private property, other than the property of its owner, is considered to be a stray.

What should I do if I find a stray dog?
For your safety do not approach an unknown dog. Instead:
- note the breed, colour, size and location of the dog; and - call Animal Control to request pickup of the dog. The Bylaw Officer will take the dog to the SPCA.

What happens when a stray dog or cat is picked up by Animal Control?
If this is the first time the dog or cat is caught running at large, and it is wearing a license tag, the Animal Control Officer will attempt to take the dog or cat home free of charge. The dog or cat can be returned if:
- it is licensed for the current period;
- the owner information is up-to-date; and
- someone 16 years of age or older is at home to accept the animal.

What should I do if I find a stray cat?
You can bring a stray cat to the SPCA. As with dogs, your safety is important.
Use caution in approaching or handling any stray cat. We recommend you use an animal carrier or kennel to safely transport all animals.

What happens to a stray at the SPCA?
The SPCA and City's goal is to reunite the animal with its owner. Every effort is made to trace any tattoos, tag numbers, microchips or other identifiable markings and to
match records of lost and found pets. Please be sure to sign release information at your Veterinarian, so they are able to give your phone number to the SPCA if the only I.D. on your animal is a rabies tag. While at the SPCA strays:
- receive food, water, shelter and medical attention by a Veterinarian;
- are cared for by trained Animal Health Technologists;
- the Medicine Hat SPCA will put up for adoption any unclaimed animal after it has been health checked and vaccinated by a Veterinarian.

What should I do if I lose my dog or cat?
- visit the SPCA to see the stray animals being held
-please bring a picture of your animal to be attached to a lost report.
